我和人聊天的时候，如果没有酒我会很快睡过去的，无论对方多么健谈和风趣，话题多
么吸引人。我的思绪都跟不上趟。我带Terry 去了一个grocery store 又单买了两瓶
Frontier.
话题是我为什么来美国，当然和根签证官说的不一样。问我几年没有见到自己的父母了
什么的。 具体说些什么我不记得了。
总之我谈了我们的三朝五代，我对历史还有一知半解，Terry 听的似懂非懂，但是疯狂
的在本子上写着，我感觉我好像在讲课，她在那记笔记一样。
不知是什么话题，使Terry 讲了她的故事。我基本上和美国人没有什么深层次的交流，
虽然最好的闺蜜外嫁给了美国人，但是每次去闺蜜家，我都问她，你老公在吗，如果告
知我出差，我就会欣然前往，如果人家在家，我就觉得我去了手脚都没有地方放。
Terry 是我来到美国后第一个也是唯一的一个异族有精神交流的朋友。

Terry 好像很enjoy 和我们 team 一起出差的日子，大家每天回来吃吃喝喝，说说笑笑
，唱唱跳跳，哭哭闹闹。全然没有了在办公室那种假严肃，假正经的样子。Terry 和我
住一个suite， 慢慢就很熟了， 我听见有一天早上，她在给她的儿子打电话，叫她儿
子 BU BU, 说妈妈很想你之类的，她儿子大概两岁左右，Terry 21, 她温柔的语调，和

到商场，除了自己零食买一堆，给狗狗也弄来各种的treat。狗狗越来越谗嘴，尽得“
民以食为天”的精髓，而且人家鼻子和耳朵都很灵，厨房里打开柜门，开个塑料袋，稍
有动静，就奔过来闹吃闹喝的。我打开的面包袋子，都象做贼一样偷偷摸摸。
运动：大部分时间是个乖巧聪明的孩子；每天下午有段时间总是很high。每天里，除了
两三小时一次大小便的出门，溜个小弯，早晚大概也有半个多小时的walk，可是仍然精
力旺盛。邻居让我们带它去狗公园跑，结果这个小爷到那儿，根本不跑，拼命在刨土挖
栏杆，弄得满身泥巴回来。大家兴致所去，败兴而回。后来的招数，是儿子骑自行车，
带着它跑一会，真是锻炼够了，回家呼呼大睡。

我们办公室schedule 是比较自由的，早来早走，晚来晚走，但是日程需要让秘书知道
一下，打个表出来，起码别人知道你什么时候在，什么时候不在。但是基本上惯例是9
点钟之前到，因为各种会议一般都安排在10点左右，办公室下午4点钟以后，就没有什
么人了。
Terry 每次都9点半左右才来，急匆匆的穿过hallway,经过每个敞开的办公室门，向自
己的cube 走去。衣服里面背心，外面天冷一件衬衣，天热一件毛线衫，而且都不扣扣
子，头发有一次我开玩笑说像个bird nest.她才用梳子非常夸张的刨了刨。
她负责support 一个manager, 另一个senior scientist 和我，因为我们以前从来没有
这个position, 因此没有人教她什么的。最初她拿到任务后，不知道怎么下手。就老去
问manager , 有一天我听到manager 对另一个人说，他不想事无巨细都解释一遍，很
