发帖数: 905 | 3 刚到一个地方，系主任问两个经常合作的系是否要参加一个symposium,并把Call for
Proposal传送给她们，也CC了我，3天后就是递交的deadline。两个系同时表示今后几
个月都没空写新的proposal,但可以参加symposium.
系主任就让我e-mail symposium的sponsor是否可以延迟递交时间，并且告诉了那两个
系。那两个系都没回答要参加。我询问的时候也CC了我的supervisor, department
chair, 一开始她就在list 上，但没有抄送那两个系。我不认识她们，也觉得她们不感
兴趣。
延期同意后，我通知2位并看了一下proposal的要求,就是200字的description，就告诉
系主任我可以写，他很高兴。我建议邀请的系里和我合作过文章的一位教授一起参与，
因为他做的和这个symposium的题目很贴近。2位也同意了。
等我draft好这200字的proposal先请系主任看过，他说非常好，让我抄送给chair和那
位教授。教授很快回复说好，只作了个别字改动。chair始终没有回答，但到晚上8点e-

"Work-Life Policies that Make a Real Difference for Individuals, Families,
and Organizations" is the title of Penn State's 15th annual Symposium on
Family Issues, to be held October 8-9, 2007. The topic will be addressed by
16 top scholars from major universities and work-family research centers.
The symposium is innovative for the integration of perspectives from
multiple social sciences as well as for addressing policy implications.

当时我认为那是一个party。同事给我说，这个不是party。
现在回头来看，symposium是地道的party。希腊文中这个
词的意思是同饮。柏拉图的对话symposium讲的就是一个
酒会上的故事。现在有些功夫，试着再读这篇。比起一年
多前是容易多了。
对话从一大帮人催一个人讲诉苏各拉底谈论爱情开始。
这些人以讹传讹，细节全都弄错了。那次聚会发生于多年
以前，剧作家Agathon得奖时。他在家里请客。苏各拉底，
阿里斯拖芬等人都在场。由于头天喝得太多，在场的人
都不愿再多喝。于是有人提议，卧谈爱情，因为，其他的神
都有许多颂歌；爱神却没有。 |

writing abstracts for EVERY author). I by default is the chair of the
symposium, and I added my boss as co-chair.
then the problem is the system only allows for 6 presenters, but my boss
wants to have 7, then unless I take myself off, this would not work..
Should I take myself off the presenters??

的确组委会在信中说得很明白，有点你说的那个意思。但是我不知道是不是这也是会议
的一种组织方式，毕竟对于一个刚举办十届的会议也许不是那么多人都知道的。那个会
是数值计算和应用数学的，不是我的领域，只是我做的一点东西相当于跨学科的，并且
提出了一个非常新颖和严格的关系式，所以不知道是不是因此入了他们的法眼。
Symposium on something很令人费解，从找到的已经被批准的session来看，如果每个
都是通过同样的理由邀请来的，最终的symposium的内容似乎是和那个题目相关的大的
方向，而不是题目本身。我由于没有这方面的经验，所以特意到这里来向大家请教。 |
