The Organizing Sourcebook - nine strategies for simplifying your life
by Kathy Waddill
It is said that if u can't declutter a room, how can you declutter the whole
world? Organized living means less stress in life, which will bring peace of
mind. That is why I found the book is helpful for me and would like to share
with all of you.
The author summarized 9 strategies and listed actions corresponding to each
strategy:
1 Make your systems fit you and your life
Make your space fit you and your life

2 Sort everything by how you use it
Sort you space by how you use it
. Sort your furniture, equipment, and things into rooms according to the way
you're using your space.
. Put the setup for each activity in the room where you most enjoy doing it.
. Put things that are used together in the same space.
. In multifunction rooms, segregate activities into separate areas. use rugs
and/or furniture to separate each function from the others.
. Once you;ve set up workable space for each major activity,

3 Weed constantly
Weed your space constantly
. If your space is set up for activities you used to do, remove the furniture,
supplies, and equipment left over from those activities if you're no longer
using them.
. Pay attention to the corners and flat surfaces in each room. Piles tend to
collect in these spots first. Every time you see a pile developing, go through
it and weed it out.
. Every time you finish working on something or playing with something, put it
away so it doesn't clutter up you

Use the right containers and tools for your space
. Think about where you've set up the supplies and equipment for each of your
current activities. If the location is keeping you from doing an activity
effectively, find a better place for it and move everything there.
. Make sure your furniture supports your activities. If you can't store
things, select furniture with storage space. If you seating is uncomfortable
or inadequate, replace it. Don't let your fur

5 Label everything
Label all your space
. Give each separate room or functional space a label according to the
thing(s) you do in it. Pay particular attention to rooms you don't really use.
Give
them accurate names so you can start to use them better.
. Base your labels for space on use. Base your labels for storage on contents.
. In multifunction spaces, label each separate area according to the activity

. Refer to cupboards and closets by the things inside them--"my clothes

6 Keep it simple
Keep your space simple
. The more stuff you have in your space, the more effort it takes to keep your
house clean and get everything done. Figure out what furniture, equipment, and
supplies you need to support your activities, then clear out the rest.
. Play around with your furniture arrangement. Select a layout that looks good
and supports your activities.
. Make sure there are adequate passageways from one space to another.
. Pay attention to piles growing in your space. If t

7 Decide to Decide
About you space
. If you've been wanting to rearrange your furniture for some time, but you
just haven't done it, put "Rearrange" on your calendar and block off enough
time for it. Then do the whole project. Avoid stopping a rearranging project
in the middle because it'll be hard to finish it later. A half-done project is
almost worse than no project at all.
. If you've been wanting different furniture or decorations for a while, put a
budget and plan together and go shopping.

8 Get help when you need it
For your space
. If someone else has made a mess in your space, ask them to clean it up. If
that person is too young to do it alone, ask him or her to help. Everyone
needs to know how much work it takes to keep things clean and neat.
. If you're planning to make changes in your furniture arrangements, discuss
them with other members of the family. Involve everyone in changes that affect
them.
