Dean Foods (DF: 7.42*, -0.02, -0.26%), America's largest milk company,
reported a sharp drop in earnings last week on a combination of higher
commodity costs and weak demand. Shares have lost two-thirds of their
value in three years. The company faces several challenges. Milk is a
notoriously difficult product to market as a brand; shoppers tend to buy
whichever jug is cheapest. Also, people drink less milk as they age, and
the population as a whole is aging. Dairy cows can eat 100 po...

History shows that once a financial bubble bursts, it can take a long time

We have a lot of information about how index funds have done, as well as the
typical actively managed mutual fund. I find that consistently two-thirds
of active managers are beaten by the indexes, and those that beat the index
in one year are not necessarily the ones who beat it the next year.
Over a very, very long period, sure, there are a few people who have
outperformed the index. But you can almost count them |

Whole Life Insurance or Term?
pdated on September 10, 2008.
The right type of life insurance can be summed up in a single word: term.
But before we explain why, it's important to understand the differences
between the most common types of insurance available. Our glossary can help
with that, and decipher some of the more common insurance lingo.
The basic difference between term and whole life insurance is this: A term
policy is life...

Bonds vs. Bond Funds
from SmartMoney University
Bonds are complex -- there's no doubt about it -- especially if you're a
novice investor with little experience in the markets. That's why a lot of
people opt for bond funds when they seek to diversify their investments with
some fixed-income exposure. Our view is, if you're willing to put in the
effort, you're better off buying individual bonds instead of bond fund |

The rules that credit-card companies have to live by changed dramatically
with the enactment of new regulations last month. Now, some of the rules for
consumers striving to maintain good credit are changing, too.
For the most part, card holders would still do well to pay on time, keep
their balances low and refrain from applying for too many credit cards at
once. But some of the old tenets may not always hold up, as credit-card
companies continue to adapt to the new environment and look |
