下面是我女儿在高中三年级（2015-2016学年）选修高中《美国历史大学先修课》（AP
American History）时所写的学期论文（junior thesis）。本地高中学生一般公认高
中文科最具挑战的课程就是《美国历史大学先修课》。我女儿总体上比较爱好理工科课
程，对我这个文科专业的父亲来说，总觉得高中文科的课程也是极有意义的。然而我女
儿是一名多年参加体操俱乐部系统训练（每周要有20多小时的体操训练，还要加上外出
参加比赛的时间）的运动员，因此对选修这门阅读量很大的美国历史大学先修课程颇有
顾虑。我考虑到这门课程的对女儿的阅读，思维和写作都有很大帮助，就极力鼓励她选
修这门课程，并且“保证”如果学期成绩只能获得B也不会有所“责难”。最后女儿“
不知深浅”地选修了这门高中文科重头课程，即使在就读期间她还一直有点“耿耿于怀
”。
这门美国历史的大学先修课的教师是一位从非洲移民过来的具有博士学位的50多岁的教
师，该教师虽然在美国生活数十年，但是他的英语口音仍然比较重，虽然女儿说她并不

60岁时将面临经济不安(economic insecurity)。所谓经济不安，是指失业一年、收入
低于贫穷线的150%或至少部分生活依赖诸如粮食券等社会福利。这项调查结果凸显经济
安全的恶化，以及让美国梦更加遥不可及。
该民调指出，日渐全球化的美国经济、不断扩大的贫富差距，以及待遇佳的制造业工作
的流失，都是导致此种趋势的因素。
这项调查的公布，正值奥巴马总统试图重振行政当局对经济的强调；他在最近的演
说中曾指出，目前最优先的工作是「重建机会窗」和扭转收入不平等。
依据多项评量，白人的困苦特别明显增加；白人对家庭经济未来的悲观程度，则攀
升至1987年以来的最高点。而在美联社和GfK的民调中，63%的白人家庭形容经济「不振
」。
维吉尼亚州布坎南郡52岁的居民艾琳?索尔耶斯(Irene Salyers)说：「我认为此种
情形将会更严重。」曾三度离婚的索尔耶斯，目前与男友一起经营蔬果摊，但收入不高。
