昨日(周二),本国智囊机构菲沙研究所(Fraser Institute)在一份新公布的报告中表示,本国每年为新移民花费230亿元,给纳税人造成沉重的财政负担。该机构还建议联邦政府出台更“实用”的政策,改革挑选移民的方法。该报告刚刚发表,立刻引起了很多团体的强烈反对,更被痛斥为肤浅、偏激的观点。
报告:政府每年给新移民倒贴6000元
这份长达62页的报告名为“2011年移民与加拿大福利状况”(Immigration and the Canadian Welfare State 2011),是菲沙研究所根据2006年的人口普查数据,以及1987年至2004年新移民平均收入和纳税数据而做的统计和研究。(点击下载报告全文pdf文件)
报告指出,近年来加国的新移民平均薪水是其他加拿大人的72%,但是他们所缴的所得税仅为后者的一半。可是,新移民却和其他人一样享受政府的服务和补助,丝毫没有由于收入少而降低。
报告还称,如果对比缴纳的税款额和所获得的政府服务价值,新移民非但没有给本国的财政做出贡献,而且平均每人从政府那里“赚取”6000元,这意味着每年本国倒贴163亿至236亿元的税银给新移民群体。

Joseph Conrad,Rudyard Kipling和Albert Camus是英法三个重要文人,
都是长期生活在殖民地的白人,
作品也是围绕种族和暴力。
推荐Kipling的短片小说The Man who would be King(同名电影更好看),
Conrad的Heart of Darkness(改编电影就是现代启示录)。
从这里面可以窥见耶律大石和盛世才的思维。

今天梁警官的trial,到法庭前集会的黑人比我想象的少,大约几十人,一多半是亚裔
,白人。值得注意的是这次活动亚裔团体里好像少了上次看到的不少南亚人。上次照片
里看到他们,他们还写文章说他们深肤色所以同情黑人。
去的黑人不多,值得注意的是黑人进一步分化了,那个女黑人活动家 Ty Black不仅没
有去,还反对了被他们批评。
媒体反应很低调,都客观简单报道。特别值得注意的是评论的稀缺。最多是在雅虎上,
然后再NPR上。这就是我们斗争的成果,否则他们很嚣张。现在看来,不会有什么很糟
糕的结局了。

我是坚决不鼓励小孩接触宗教的。宗教迷惑性太强,小孩子抵抗力绝比不过人生低潮期
的成年人,太容易陷进去。
我家小孩倒是喜欢阅读,水平也还不错,就是层次太低,什么白雪公主看的津津有味,
给她买了儿童字典,借了些上档次的书,比如RUDYARD KIPLING的THE JUNGLE BOOK
(她很爱那个电影),就是没兴趣。。。前两天借了CHARLIE AND GLASS ELEVATOR,也是念了几章半途而废。

Tobias is mum on what the 69 plots were, but on the assumption that half
were variations on Taking Up the White Man's Burden, I'd say this is one we
can safely pass by.

我不爱看中译本。借了本No-Sided Professor。跟数学有关的东东都蛮有趣的。话说
Rudyard Kipling有好几篇不错的短篇。比如The Jungle Book的第一篇可以当短篇看。
还有一些玄玄的,鬼鬼的。就是殖民色彩太重,现在不流行了。

French historical author Patrick Modiano has won the 2014 Nobel Prize for
literature.
The Nobel Academy described the novelist, whose work has often focused on
the Nazi occupation of France, as "a Marcel Proust of our time".

因为美国的劳动节在9月份。那么,美国的劳动节为什么会在9月而不是在5月呢?这要
从一百多年前的纽约说起。
19世纪的纽约,到处充斥着无限制的长时间廉价劳动、糟糕的工作环境以及最低的劳动
报酬。没有雇主会注意工作安全问题,而成千上万的人们都在等着取代敢于质疑这种工
作环境的人来得到一份养家糊口的工作。随着劳动者们不满的增加,Rudyard Kipling
的《丛林法则》开始起了作用:
“这就是丛林法则 —
像苍天一样恒久不变的真理:
单个的狼的力量如沙粒一样渺小,
但狼群的力量却是无所不摧。”
由于实在无法忍受糟糕的工作环境,劳动者们开始逐渐地团结起来组织罢工和游行。第
一个劳动节的庆祝是在1882年9月5日的纽约。成千上万的劳动者组织起来参加游行示威
,要求实现“八小时工作、八小时休息、八小时娱乐”。之后大家还一起进行野餐和庆
祝。当然,破天荒地工人在这一天没有进行任何工作。
1894年,为了感谢所有为美国的政治和经济进步做出了贡献的劳动者们,美国联邦政府
规定每年9月第一个星期一为劳动节,并确立为联邦节日
