active funds. Target series are fund of index funds.
For any investor, the first question, and the most important one in my
opinion, you should ask yorself is NOT which fund to invest. Instead one
should ask: why do I invest? waht and when do I need the money for? Is it
for my retiremnt twenty yrs from now? is it my kid's college expense ten yrs
from now? or is it for my house down payment that I need in 5 yrs?

or expense ratio. You should instead understand why you need it in your
overallportfolio. I have a feeling that you chose PIMVO REal Return solely
based on its performance during the past years. PRTNX is mostly invested in
TIPS with the purpose of inflation hedge. If you intended to use it as your
inflation hedge in the first place and allocated certain amount of money to
it, then you should keep it. It's a solid fund.

can achieve better performance if I were to manage my own s.s. money. But
seeing the way average joes manage their retiremnt money, I now think as a
nation we do need a basic safety net for retired working class. consider S.S
as a colossal defined benefit retirement plan and use it to complement your
401K/IRA. This is a great way to diversify your source of retirement income

. its risk profile as determined by equity/fixed income ratio matches the
risk tolerance of people with a very long time horizon. and as you are
closer to your target retirement age, it will adjust its holdings to reflect
lower risk tolerance. as such target retiremnt funds are the ultimate buy
