I'd recommend "A Deepness in the Sky" to anyone who finishes
"A Fire upon the Deep." It talks about three thousand years
ago when Pham Nuwen was still a legendary hero in the human
kind inter-stellar space. It's not as rich or thougt-provoking
as "A Fire upon the Deep," but still full of interesting
ideas and storylines.
One interesting observation:
"A Fire upon the Deep" was written in 1992, the dawn age of
the web, when the author could easily envision a galactical
usenet.

just Fantasy although that is looking damn good all by itself. My Sci-Fi
list last year was only 7 books long, which grew a little with the year, but
it was so short I combined it with UR and Steampunk picks. This year Sci-Fi
warrants a post all its own with loads of debuts and returning stars. The
people claiming Sci-fi is dying or already dead should shear the wool off
their eyes and see what is brewing.

，kumar是个很典型的人。人家经常说这么一句话：要出成果，每天只能睡4小时。他的
确是这么干的。人家过去全家在NYC，他自己有个3万块买的快倒掉的房子。每天就是睡
4小时。按照他的活法，中午睡30分钟。然后一路工作到凌晨2点。回家睡4小时。然后
就吃个早饭，开始干到中午。这就叫MIT。
这根本不是华东理工能训练出来的。另外，名校出身的其他素质都非常强。我去aiche
也有那么几次了。凡是ivy,mit出来的。做presentation都是不用看ppt的。人家都是背
出来的。
后来我想起来了。ravy在当教授的，他手底下的印度学生，都是提前2个月，每天都花2
小时在drill她们的ppt。ravy就是mit毕业的。
这种刻苦程度，都不是华东理工出来的人可以扛的。
而相反，美国非常看重专业。所以说，如果是一群非常有能力，有决心，有魄力的上海
南市，普陀，杨浦之类市区下只角出来的精品上海女生，还都得是进大学前就破身的大
骚B，靠好专业，靠她们的社会活动能力，就能杀出一条血路。

云老师发了个贴说清华目前的找人标准，很多人不相信。特地调研了一下清华生命学院
最近回去的人的情况，如云老师所说，绝大多数都有2cns，如果只有一篇cns，那基本
上还有>2的子刊。这个不仅仅局限于胖老师经常说的结构生物学，而是所有方向都基本
如此。
当然这些新回去的绝大部分都是千青（有些不是的是因为回去那一年千青还没开始）。
网页上的Title有的是教授，有的是研究员，估计当时还没有统一。但校内一律都是副
教授，也就是相当于这边的AP。我还特地打听了一下，国内的TT制度好像没有Tenured
Associate这一档，清华5年考核通过了就是正经的full professor。
有些老师看不上国内的科研，我就仅列出两位回国后的publication，咱就不说颜宁等
这种Early T的个例了。说两个没太有名气的，还没有评上T的，各位老师可以参考一下

来的医生高，但是你的薪水不会比他们高，而且是显著的区别。
在美国做完医生，可以回和睦家，也可以在美国 private practice,CDC,FDA,
insurance,pham company。大家不都活得挺好？老印，老巴都行，为什么每次有国内的
人想考，大家都在泼冷水？在美国当医生总不用担心被家属追着砍吧.年纪大了，跳窗
户腿脚也不是那么灵便了... |

做的东西比较窄，以后再跳槽选择比较少呢。就比如在pham company做，以后如果跳的

of normal pro players won't be as lucky.

you play T/A style, you can win, but not much. with my experience, the
biggest winner should be adjustable loose-aggressive style. From all those
big names: Ivey, Hansen, Juanda,all those Tran, Pham,... they all carry this
way. However, if you are the beginner or medium or even medium - high level
, don't go too looser, that will hurt you. When you have more experience,
you can loose it a bit, a bit.
