1. be critical and be nasty是两回事。有的人非常smart/sharp所以让人觉得敬畏，
但nasty是personality上的。
2. 研究生阶段的politics和做faculty后的不可同日而语。研究生阶段，教授大多是乐
意看到自己学生、自己系的学生有出息。一般来说，你不惹事，事不惹你。
做faculty后就大不一样了，你不惹事，事也惹你。什么是nice/nasty，谁nice/nasty，
他为什么对你nice/nasty，都不能孤立的看。
学校跟工业界不同的地方就在于，senior的人有天牛，外在约束少，所以能看到更多人
性的展示。包括善的和恶的。而在公司，因为team work，因为山不转水转，
多个朋友多条路，有再多的龃龉也保持表面和气，人跟人一般不下狠手。 |

偶读研究生系的一个老师是个巨牛，圈里有名的刺头，系里很多junior faculty
都怕他，他在偶的委员会里，曾经也恨过他，因为他让偶comprehensive exam
过了一年才过(说偶方法方面的背景不够强，让再选两门课才能重新写他出的题，
但是他那部分的题在答辩之前都做了决定不让过，连给个答辩的机会都没有）
但是偶后来还是从心底里感激他，因为他教课教的太好了，是一个特别敬业的老师，
也和他一起做过研究，受他很大的影响。他去世的时候，我还专门飞回学校参加
他的memorial service, 他很多自己的advisees都没去，系里很多老师也没去...
很巧的是在那里碰到一个专业top journal 的主编，本来就很熟，不知是否因为那个
特殊的场合，在之后的一两篇文章接受的特别顺利...这就是所谓的 karma吧，
what goes around, comes around.
现在系的一个老师也是个在很多人眼里nasty的人，偏巧和我一个方向，和我

乐，还没事把我们tenure拿出来威肋。碰到这种情况怎么办？系里人都挺讨厌it的，但
it和dean关系好且占着院里tenure committee的位置，it的spouse,一个equaly
political但less讨厌的人占着学校tenure committee的位置。这种人跟本不是躲就躲
得开的。之前躲，被找上门来说我对it 不friendly，不躲吧，和it走近了其它同事看
在眼里照样得罪人。这种情况怎么办？除了move有没有更prominent一点的解决办法？ |

our rep in the college P&T committee. And he is the Chair in our Dept
Committee. Good news is that this guy has a very bad reputation in the
college. This guy gave a very negative letter for me for my dossier during
our Dept P&T review. But I still got a unanimous vote at the college (he can
't vote).
So do your job and try to avoid him as much as you can. And wait for his
retirement (damn!) :-) |

我用词从来很小心，也就是评价了一个网友读错金算子的帖子，我只是针对事，不是对
人，网友把金算子读成算精子了，我开玩笑说他真有才，说算精子这件事比背圆周率几
百位的要牛逼多了，这“牛逼”是Nasty Word么？是Google输入法niubi的第一个，前
面是个动物，就算是Nasty了？这不是胡乱诬陷祖国文字么？！我又不是针对她人的，
咋这么敏感。我还特意查了一下人民日报网站，这牛逼二字也是到处都是，比如

难道买买提还比祖国的人民网还严格？

I've lived in Beijing and Shanghai both for more than 5 years so I can say
with authority that in general the Beijing people are far nicer, friendlier
and with a much better sense of humour. They're also far less obsessed with
money. For lots of Shanghainese, money is the only topic they have any
opinions about.

不理解为什么好多华人MM那么挖空心思地向白人同事介绍中国的零食
看隔壁的一个贴，好多人在讨论哪些中国店买来的零食饮料老美会喜欢。我看了真想顶
锅盖说一句，不知道这些MM哪来的那么大的热情，反正我是没有任何拿中国的东西讨好
白人的欲望。我们中国人吃的东西，我们自己喜欢就好了，至于他们喜欢如何，不喜欢
又如何。
也许那些MM都很幸运，能遇到那么多真心热爱中国文化的朋友。反正我是没有那么幸运
。我当初刚来美国的时候，也是出于天真的好心试图介绍中国文化，但都是热脸贴冷屁

好多白人虽然可能表面上看不出来，但内心多少都有那么一些种族优越感（坐等嫁白人
老公的MM来砸我），对中国的东西总是有那么一些鄙视，尤其是made in china的东西

Organic蔬菜确实是用农家肥的，当然不是直接浇上去，而是发酵之后填在土里，而且
不用杀虫剂的蔬菜也会长很nasty的虫子，用了杀虫剂岂不是更clean?我可不是Organic
fan，我是相信科学的解释而不是去相信感觉。你吃的肉类在被杀的时候都很nasty，
螃蟹，龙虾都是海底下吃死鱼和动物尸体长大的，它们nasty的样子你没看见罢了。
当然这都是个人习惯，自己爱吃什么自己决定，没必要就凭自己的“感觉”去抨击别人。
