一个问题：一位武士上厕所时遭到袭击，他只有一根短棒，为了
挡住射击，短棒应旋转360度（支点可以变化），但厕所很小，
问短棒最少要扫过多大面积？
这个问题引起当时很多人的兴趣，如1925年Birkhoff在他
写的The origin, nature, and influence of relativity
一书中提到“近几年日本数学家挂谷宗一提出的问题，是同样令
人感兴趣的问题”
1928年，苏联数学家Besicovitch，Abram Samoilovitch
（1891-1970）解决了这个问题，答案是可以任意小，1960s
Besicovitch在美国数学会就挂谷问题专门做了期科普电影，
有意思的是中间他打了个喷嚏，Besicovitch觉得很不雅，
坚持要求在录像中把这个镜头剪掉，于是现在人们看到的是

我下了之后，直奔高斯的传记。
看了关于高斯的几个八卦，还挺有意思。
-高斯心算能力很强
-高斯从十几岁开始一直保持着记录科学日记的习惯，记录他每天对数学的思考。
-高斯把学习语言当作一种爱好，七十多岁了又开始学习俄语。
他觉得学习新的语言能让他的大脑保持年轻。
他学习俄语完全靠自学。自学没多久很快就能阅读俄语的文学作品了。
俄语和英语文学作品给他带来了很多的快乐。
据他的一些俄罗斯数学家朋友说，高斯的俄语口语也是"perfect"的。
-高斯曾被拿破仑罚款2000法郎
-高斯不喜欢政治，但他每天用一个小时的时间读报来了解各地发生的事情。
他并不相信那些新闻的报道，但他有能力从这些报道中推测出真正发生的是什么事情。

Fefferman的研究领域之一是调和分析（也叫Fourier分析）
比方说从航空站发回的一张卫星照片，用Fourier分析的工具
可以把照片上的光波分解成互相独立的"频率"，如果这些
"频率"出现某种不规则现象，原来的卫星照片就会模糊不清，

拍卖，第二年瑞典化学家Berzelius,Jons把它交给法国解剖
学家Cuvier,George，自从1666年以来，这位伟大哲学家的
头骨不断被很多收藏家收藏（据说最后一位的出价是37法郎）
现在终于回到了他的祖国，后来这颗珍贵的遗物被法国科学院

of this field? I am doing traditional biology and want to do that in future.
But it seems that the area only welcomes mathematicians, but not
experimental biologists like me. I was wondering if it is worthwhile to do a
master in mathematical modelling first and then find a postdoc in that
field. Are there labs doing both bench work and modelling? |

发帖数: 15 | 47 恩，是的，你说的第一和第二类已经有很多人在做，而且相当成熟啦。我所说的
mathematical biology 大概是用数学和物理的原理来解释或模拟基本的生物现象，或
者说mathematical modelling in biology， 要用到很多微分方程的东西。 数学底子
嘛，跟数学出生的相比，当然是很薄弱的，自己课余时间学了点皮毛，像linear
algebra, ODE, a little bit of PDE, multivariable calculus, complex analysis,
MAPLE & MATLAB. 没有实际modelling的经验。
本来想找个这个方向的博后，发现人家都需要你有很强的数学背景。所以想读个应用数
学的master先，但是不知道这样可行性如何。 |

我用mathematic画三维立体图。Z方向的数值范围应该是８０－１８０，我输入的大部
分的数值是８０－１１０，只有３个数是１１０以上，为什么画出来的图上面没有这三
个１１０以上的数据？怎样才能把这三个数也画进去？谢谢 |
