One of the world’s premiere environmentalists, credited as a founder of the
green movement, is fighting plans to erect wind turbines in his own village.
Professor James Lovelock, 93, is renowned for having created the “Gaia
Theory” and becoming one of the World’s earliest and most active modern
environmentalists. He is also known for predicting global warming and saying
that by the year 2100 warming would kill off four fifths of the world’s
population.

早上起来，发现自己置身于小得不能再小的村镇－Lovelock。小镇的名字起的很有意思，
“爱锁”，不知道有没有“永结同心”之意。麻雀虽小，五脏据全，小镇有政府办公楼、
超市和快餐店。由于紧挨着80州际公路，来往的过客带给小镇些许繁华。进了内华达州后
，高速公路旁显得更加荒凉，而点缀在州内的城市、村落都遍布赌场，竭尽全力的带来点
人气。Lovelock镇相反有些清新雅致，宁静的街道，简朴的生活，心灵可以得到稍稍的放
松了。
今天的第一站是内华达州的Reno（里诺）。对里诺的了解来自于《金山词霸》，其解释为
美国有名的离婚之都，在内华达州西部。凡欲离婚者，只须在该市住满三个月，即可离婚
。但后来在网上查查，却看不到类似的英文说明。
与拉斯维加斯和大西洋城一样，感觉上赌博也是该市的支柱性产业。但赌场的规模不大，
看客就更少了，落得“门前冷落鞍马稀”的境地。

案有印象。在辛普森前妻尼古拉•布朗•辛普森（Nicole Brown Simpson）

100多年前，摩门教受到其他基督教派的排挤，走头无路。1847年7月24日，Brigham
Young率领众摩门教信徒从Nauvoo, Illinois来到Salt Lake Valley（盐湖谷）。一路跋
山涉水，历进千辛万苦，也成为了开发西部的先驱。在这里，他们建立了盐湖城。盐湖城
理所当然的成了摩门教的代名词，市区的Temple Square（摩门广场）自然也成了摩门教
的总部。
摩门教译自Mormon，其正规说法应是The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day
Saints。如果在一百年前，这个翻译绝对精妙，因为当时摩门教被称为邪教，其一夫多妻
的政策直到今天还被人们津津乐道。“摩门”正好和“魔门”同音。但现在一夫多妻的制
度早就被废除了。除了其组织严密之外，似乎看不出与其他基督教门派的区别了。

alarmist" about the timing of climate change, but not about climate change
itself: he still believes the climate should be warming although the rate of
change is not as once thought:
