古代原始人狩獵時，為求取食物而登山涉水，在人與人或人與獸戰爭格鬥時，為求生
存，游泳是最基本技能。而公元9000年前，在Libyan沙漠Wodiseri岩洞上，發現有當時
游泳者之游泳動作的壁畫，顯示上古時代，人類已有水中活動的技能。在大英博物館保
存亞述利亞(Assyria)遺物浮雕中有15世紀戰爭中戰敗國Hittiles人渡河逃走之場面。已
知當時已有側泳、捷泳的技能及水上救生的技巧。
古代波斯是一個強國，在軍事訓練中，游泳是強迫實施的項目。古希臘關於水中活
動的資料很豐富，不少古希臘古物與作品中，有許多與游泳有關的實物與記述，在希臘
索倫法律中，曾規定兒童須習希臘文與游泳。社會上流行有譏諷愚者的諺語：「他既不
能文，又不能游泳」足見他們對游泳的重視，在羅馬也同樣認為不會游泳與無知是一樣
的愚蠢，羅馬青年訓練中包括有游泳項目，1832年美國富蘭克林曾提出幾種防溺方法，
以資泳者遵守。
在我國游泳運動史資料極少，但自大禹治水及各朝代水師設置的資料推斷，對水中
活動技術有相當水準，古籍中對游泳的記載始於春秋時代。左傳在莊子談及顏回與孔子

除不祥之事，及其他與游泳有關的記事，散見於史料中，也是武術家修練的項目之一，
日本有很多游泳流派，盛行於民間。
而我國古時各項運動的發生與流傳，多有史冊可考，唯獨游泳一項記載貧乏，國人對於
