Some thoughts on one hand
This hand was played in the bbo money bridge game. You play with a robot,
your LHO also plays with a robot. The score format is total points.
You hold Ax K9x xx AKQ8xx , both white,
The first question is what to open?
Of course 1NT is a possible choice. However, this hand is probably
too strong for 1NT because of the strong suit in clubs. You don't need
a lot from partner to make 3NT. So you should open 1C, even play with
a robot.
The bidding develops :

There could be another stronger line if you take HK on the first trick. When
you cash CA and opp drops C9, you can suspect that it could be a singleton.
So you just play back H right away to cut opp's connections.
If opps cash 4 hearts, you just come back to the squeeze position.
If LHO wins HT and shoot back D, you just play DA, back to CK to check the C
position. When the bad news comes (assume LHO discards a D), you just play
another H and play LHO for 4-3-5-1. If RHO cashes all his hearts, y... 阅读全帖

OK, reconstruct the play, say LHO started with 4351 shape:
Trick 1, H2 lead, RHO plays HJ, you duck
Trick 2: RHO plays low H, you win HK
Trick 3-4: you cash CAK (LHO pitches a D)
Trick 5: you play a H, RHO wins
Trick 6: RHO cashes 1 more H (LHO pitches a D), leaving 1 H un-cashed
Trick 7: RHO plays a spade, you win SA
Trick 8: you play CQ, LHO pitches 3rd D
At this point, LHO has 3 spades and 2 D, all you need to do is to play D to
DA. The "best" defense you suggested (to cash 4th H but not last... 阅读全帖

If H is 3-3, you can always make it if you only lose one trump in C.
if H is 4-2, you can make it if you can ruff two H or HQx appears and you
also lose only one C later.
so it appears that you want to play LHO to hold 2 H and Cxx, CJxx, CKxx, CJx
CKx or CKJ. Or RHO holds 2H and can't overruff you, or after RHO's overruff
with CJ, you just take the success finesse in C and later play a squeeze in
S and H or S is 3-3 with SQ on side.

the count information helps partner more (declarer won't be able to tell if
LHO is 5/4/3-cards). If h2 is count(std), that means LHO is hAQxx3. I can't
see how declarer is going to make it. Whenever LHO/RHO gets in, LHO can cash
hA to drop the declarer's bare K (based on count) - 5 tricks already.
If h2 is not count, then h is probably 4-4 (LHO not likely to lead from AQ3)

When LHO has 2353, 2443 shapes, or 2344 with CQ, it doesn't matter whether
you cash DA first or not. You can make either way.
If LHO has 2254 with CQ, playing small D is indeed better. If LHO cashes CQ
and exit with another D, you still have to guess whether LHO started with
HKQ or HKx (both cases are very unlikely, but I'll go with KQ tight), but it
is certainly better than 100% down as in the case of cashing DA then Dx.

That is a likely layout, although it may not be necessary to play C to J

How about this line? First try C to K. If it loses to A, next try C to J. If
it also loses, go back to D finesse. This line works if RHO has CA, or LHO
has CQ, or LHO has DQ. The chance to fail is about 1/8 = 12.5%.
My previous line to end-play LHO fails if RHO has
exactly D Qxx, and

From the bidding and the lead, it is likely LHO holds long spades, or 4-4.
Based on this assumption, it may be better for declare to check diamonds
before playing hearts.
As the real play goes, after HT wins, declarer already has two tricks in
each suit. He should check whether diamonds break before playing third
hearts. Otherwise when LHO follows Hx rather than HQ, he will have a
headache to choose A or J, either of which can be wrong.

The actual holding is LHO with KQx.
East bid 4D with CKTx, HKJxxxx.
To play small will also work if LHO has ST while RHO has SKQ. But this
involves bizarre guess for declarer when LHO plays small: you need to play 9
if LHO has T, and play J if LHO has KQ (expert may follow small from KQx).
Which way is better in percentage? At the table, declarer played SA then
small, but he did not cash SA earlier which should be a minor mistake.

from the dummy to K in my hand. If SA is in RHO's hand, I will make the deal

SQ of RHO. Then if RHO returns a D, dummy Q. If DK is in LHO, no way to make

can over-ruff and play a club, hoping that LHO shows out, in which case you can make an overtrick. If LHO follows, you ruff in dummy (club should be 3-3), finesse spades, cash SA, then club (dummy pitches heart). RHO can ruff this, but has to give you DK. Make only 2.

I guess the point is, it doesn't hurt to try. If LHO ducks smoothly, you
still have 50-50 shot. If LHO is not prepared, you may gain valuable
information. You give up the small chance of RHO holding singleton honor in
S, but this may be more than compensated by the chance that you catch LHO
off guard.
This is a different situation than missing only Queen. If you are trying to
find the queen (say you can finesse either way), then distributional

第二种情况,假定左手实际是两张将牌,你打第三轮梅花后,RHO拿住并吊第三轮将牌

Considering the bidding, chance for LHO to have only 5 spades is not that
low. Against average defenders it might be best to cash clubs then exit with
a spade, if you believe it is 5-3 split. When LHO cashes last spade, RHO
will be squeezed, if he holds HQJ and DKQ.
But with strong defenders, this probably won't work. LHO can win the spade
exit and switch to a diamond immediately.

Best play will go down, wrong play (with lucky guess) will make.
LHO cashes 3 spades (keep last spade un-cashed) and exit with a heart. RHO
pitches 1 diamond and 1 heart, with 5 cards left: HQJ, DKQT. Now double-
dummy, declarer can just play hearts and score H10. But declarer has no idea
that LHO started with 4 hearts. He more likely will play LHO for 6313 shape

Yes, not covering HQ is wrong most of time. So I think it is reasonable to
think RHO has no HK if not covered. (50% HK onside)
Then after LHO is in with HK, it is also reasonable to assume he will not

So if he gives sluff and ruff, we will try to drop his CK. (chance 1/12).

I won by SK on the first trick.
Then I ducked a dia, my LHO won by DJ,
Now she began to cash her long spade suit, wow, she had
6 spades. I discarded two clubs and one heart from dummy,
two clubs, one dia, one heart from hand.
My RHO discarded 3 clubs. and on the last spade, he was squeezed!

Looks the best chance is to try squeeze RHO in the black suit -- it's
reasonable to assume LHO has something like 2-5-4-2 shape.
So draw trumps, pitch 1C and 2S in the dummy. And hopefully duck a C to East.
Then on your run of D, East will be squeezed.
If LHO's alert enough to play a C honor, win it, cash the SA, and run the D to
squeeze RHO, hoping him to hold 2 of the 3 C honors. To protect his S holding,
he'll be stripped of one and you can throw him in to lead into your S tenance.

that is what i did. wait and see policy. after pd bid 4s, i think rho show
his shape and i have good control, so i think i should play a 6s
This is basically my line. however, rho turned out to have sqx and down 1.
I thought about this hand later. rho showed 55 minor, so he has 3 card in
major only, either 2-1 0r 1-2.
lho choosed 3c after rho's 2n, showing his 4 card club spt and his opening
lead showed he has only two d. so lho has either 4

Last night, kibitzed a game among Meltzer/devo(Peter Weichsel), Fred/Uday on
BBO, and this hand came up:
xx
x
KQxxx
AQ10xx
AKJx
KJx
AJxx
Kx
Meltzer opened 2NT. LHO(Uday) bid 4H. Weichsel bid 5NT, seems saying "pick up
a minor slam" but Meltzer bid 6NT anyway.
LHO led the 10 of spades, clearly doubleton or some shortness.
How would you play the hand?

Seems an avoidance play. Have to keep LHO off lead so as to set up clubs
before LHO can go through diamonds again.

I'd try SK, seems LHO has a very distributional hand,
perhaps something like this:
SAxx HAKJxx D- CAKxxx
pd may have something like this:
SJxx Hxx DQJ9xxx CQx
so we have to make an aggressive lead here and get one spade trick
before your potential club stopper is knocked out.
SK could hardly cost you a trick. Usually, your LHO has sp control,
so no matter who holds SJ, SK should be quite safe.

Yeah, I think the key is not to draw any round of trump before you play a
small diamond from table. And you play DK when East plays small.
You still have chance when LHO has 4d I think.
Suppose West wins with DA, you win his return in hand and play DJ, when West
covers, you must ruff it with SJ. If east overruffs, defense is over; If east
discards, you have to hope for SQ doubleton.
I had my life easy when I played this hand--LHO led a diamond.
