大利南部，和希腊殖民者的接触有很长的历史。为了争夺南意大利西海岸，特别是
Campnia地区与希腊人有着长期的冲突。在另一个方向，他们对东海岸的Apulia也有兴
趣，不过这里属于Illyrian的Messapii（梅萨皮 ，Iapygian – 的一支）人牢固地掌
握的地区，沿海还有希腊的殖民城市。
Samnites早期的社会形式基本上可以认为是分散在山里面的部落群。他们中的大多数属
于游牧民（herdsman），对定居的城市生活毫无概念。其中的一些部落可能结成了某种

中固守。Clusium的国王Porsena看到不能在一次战斗中解决问题，就改变战术，分散兵
力对罗马进行围困，重点放在切断罗马从外部获得粮食的途径。罗马方面的执政官
Publius Valerius Publicola则针锋相对，派出部队袭击Etruscan的小股部队，顺便也
接应小股的运粮队。同时，两执政官也策划了稍大型的袭击和战斗。Porsena在看到罗
马方面顽强的抵抗后意识到彻底征服罗马代价过大，于是就与罗马讲和了，条件是收取
罗马一定数量的人质，同时罗马归还Veii一部分土地。这个条件显然不是平等条约，但
罗马人知道双方力量对比的差距，就答应了Porsena的条件以换取和平。
围攻罗马就这样结束了，不过放在整个意大利的政治版图上，这个只是Etruscan一次南

力，建立了共和。从社会制度而言，这个转变不能说是革命性的。罗马是一个由贵族统
治大量农业人口的地区强权，这一点在共和前后是一致的。需要注意的是，罗马的王政
中，国王只是更有势力的家族代表，和中国的家天下还是很不一样的。重要的变化只有
一条，就是以前是在贵族中选出一个国王，而国王任期终身。共和后还是在贵族中选举
， 不过选出来的是任期一年的民事，军事和宗教领导集团，包括consuls，praetors
等等。只有独裁官的权利范围接近国王，但这不是固定职务，任期也只有半年。于此相
联系的是部族大会（assembly）的角色。王政的时候，assembly是国王来公布其法令的
场合。共和后，assembly要就重大议题，比如战争还是和平，是否接受新公民等等进行
投票表决。
和政治制度比起来，罗马的社会和经济生活变化要更大一些。其中最重要的一点是平民

征的史料来源：首先，蒙古秘史对西征的记载极不详细，可见当时的西方Latin
Christendom不是蒙古人注意的主要方向。秘史只是简单的提到了拔都的西征，还和速
不台的西征混为了一谈。来自金帐汗国的史源极为稀缺，至少到2004年都没有什么为西
方的蒙古历史研究者所知的记录。这样，Latin世界之外稍微详细的记录就剩下波斯13
世纪的历史学家Juwayni（或是Juvayni）的History of the World Conqueror。西方这

但是我附加一点：
这几个地名都是不断变化的。比如亚细亚本来连阿拉伯，印度都不包括，后来连中国日
本都含进去了。
现在的阿非利加这个词一般说是罗马人起的名字，说的就是你说的北非西部那一块。罗
马还有一个阿非利加省。但是更早古希腊人那里，比如希罗多德时代，把埃及西边的北
非叫做利比亚。埃及南边叫做“阳光灼热之地”（Afriki)。把黑人叫做太阳之子，或
者阳光之子。
至于罗马人给迦太基那一代起的名字Africa，是不是意译或者音译了希腊人，是有争论
的。多半说是意译了希腊人的，也就是意思上也是“阳光之地”，但是位置不同，从罗
马的视角的南方，有了转移。后来被阿拉伯人抄去了。

我要替中国辩护，并不是因为我是一个中国人，而是因为我知道中国就和这世界上绝大
数的国家一样，虽然有很多丑陋的现象，但是他们是受害者。就
象这个犯罪集团里很多的人一样，他们来自各种种族，他们可能充当了工具，但他们不
是制造这一切，谋划这一切的人。虽然经常会暴露中国产品出现问题。但要知道中国是
世界工厂，他们只是打工者，他们只是按照各种雇主提供的配方来生产，他们并不知道
