c********x 发帖数: 232 | 2 I have to say that this assumption is defective.
You assumed that Pujols will be put into a positon where protection is bette
r. But in the past two seasons when he won the MVP, Cardinals actually have
decent, if not great protection for him. Last year there were Ludwick and Tr
oy Glaus. This year Holliday was around for about half a season to pick up s
ome slack. Remember, you don't need multiple protections. You need one prote
ction, and that is it. You cannot argue Pujols does not have it in |

|

|
q**u 发帖数: 12289 | 11 still has room for Holliday's $20mil+40% tax, hehe |
|

|
q**u 发帖数: 12289 | 14 I think we'll see some movements on the Bay and Holliday fronts pretty soon. |

q**u 发帖数: 12289 | 15 holliday is going to get signed very quickly now. |

a********l 发帖数: 39524 | 17 seven-year, $120-million
7 years is plain absurd. annual salary is probably fair for the current
market, but i'd be pissed if i were pujols.
look for pujols to get a lot if he were to stay with STL. |
|
|
|
a***n 发帖数: 5665 | 21 just curious how the cards can keep their payroll below 100m.... |
|
|
a********l 发帖数: 39524 | 23 money will be no problem for pujols, and he may not even demand that much.
pujols sells for this team, the ownership knows if they lost pujols by
being cheap, they lose significant attendance and end up hurting their
revenue. |
|
a********l 发帖数: 39524 | 24 they also unloaded some big contracts like glaus. |
|
|
n*******e 发帖数: 2213 | 26 That is truly the challenge there. Cards GM has to be superb in terms
of identifying and developing players in order that Cards be competitive.
Pujols probably will sign his last big contract next winter (or is it
after 2011?). I see no chance that he would sacrifice his salary for
the "greater good" of the team. If I have to make a guess, I think his
contract might be like 240/8.
At this rate, Cards might do better trading him to Yankees/RSox or
some team with financial flexibility than keeping |
|
|
q**u 发帖数: 12289 | 28 1, it won't be for 30m X 8
2, no cardinals GM will ever dare to trade pujols, even if it means the team
would never win the division again |
|
a********l 发帖数: 39524 | 29 interestingly, there have always been a group of cards fans wanting to
trade pujols at his highest value for several decent players. this on
paper could make the the team better, as one player can only do so much.
but i think the management knows better, if they lost pujols, people will
stop paying to see games, and they lose revenue, which to them tops
winning.
competitive. |

|
n*******e 发帖数: 2213 | 31 I know that one can be obsessed with a player. But if Pujols' salary is proj
ected to be 30M, Cardinals have to let him go. Cardinals cannot afford payin
g him while building a team that is competitive. This is just too much to as
k for a mid-market team. Cardinals are lucky in some way -- Ryan Howard beco
mes a FA in the same year so at least they have a fallback option that does
not cost as much.
Without a salary cap, baseball is not fair. No question about it.
I, for one, am not against the i |
|
a********l 发帖数: 39524 | 32 hard to say. if pujols demands 30 mil a year, cards will likely have to

n*******e 发帖数: 2213 | 35 St. Louis was called baseball heaven long before Pujols came in town.
There is a reason for that.
And if you root for Cubs just because Cardinals do not keep Pujols,

|

|
a********l 发帖数: 39524 | 40 ok, that might be a little exaggerating. but it's totally conceivable that
a large portion of the fan base will be angry if we lose pujols and they

claim, but they can only take so much. |

Yeah I understand. But they need at least presentable players...
Especially in New York, competing with Yankees for fans, media attention,
