The trick is: after you ruff the open lead DA and pull 4 rounds of trump, you
only have 1 trump in hand, which is your only entry. You must be careful with
the possible block in C, otherwise you could go down. Therefore, it is
IMPORTANT to throw dummy's D in your 4th trump. If not, when your opp wins the
3rd C with CQ and then return a D, you can only ruff and CT is still in dummy,

What I hate most is the 2C open, It usually ends up with a nightmare,
especially with a pd you don't know much.
With this hand, however, I suppose I have to open 2C. Pd responds a
negative 2D. Now I have a choice between 2H and 2NT. I think the former
is better coz this hand is more promising in suit contract, if there's
a fit.
Pd then bid 2S, I cannot see anything but 3S and he gives me 4S.
So far so good, but what am I going to do next?

What happened to your system? I thought you had some gadget to deal with such
hand after a reverse. In general I'm a big advocate of jumping to 2N with
suitable 16 count, but this hand 2N might wrong side the contract too much and
I might still temporalize with a 2D reverse, after which even if you get to
6N, it would be from a safer side... In any case I sympathize Meyers and
Montin who are surely telling their friends what happened to their game...

and 2 tricks for def.
for a hand like this, you have 10 winners, much more than the need for 8-
winners for 4S and you can't afford a pass for open 1S.
Even more, after open 2C, if pd 3c or 2h to show strong hand, you have a
almost 6 already. if pd 2d, you can bid either 2s, show interests or 3s show
solid S suite with at least 10 tricks, which is in independent game
strength. |

open 2C with one ace less. 2C promises more, especially more defense, than
that---e.g. quick winners > quick losers...
Bids such as Namyats are designed for those kind of hands. |

It is simple, pd X1s show 3H, so he must have 4D at least.
With 54+ D fit and 43 H fit, to play is usually better than to def.
And 3D over 2D, show you have a strong D fit in the first round.
If pd start to cue, with the hand, I will continue to cue.
Maybe for arrows, 2D or 3D matters a lot.
For my level, it is just a feeling that 3D is better than 2D.

hand is between 2D and 3D, I won't argue against either choice.
Now partner bids 2H. One point that some people seem missed is that, 2H
shows extra value, 15 to bad 18. Why? Because my 2D denies 5 hearts (
otherwise I will bid 2H instead of 2D, knowing we have 5-3 fit), then with
minimum hand, why would partner bid 2H to insist 4-3 fit instead of 8 or 9-
card diamond fit? It is just illogical.

bid 3S splinter as well. Because once partner pushes, as far as I'm
concerned, it's game forcing. For such a hand, slam is not good on trump
lead (after the splinter, it's pretty marked). From partner's point of view,
I'd say this is about the limit that he can imagine. So unless you push to
slam all by yourself after 2H, you have a good chance to miss it.

then there is almost no hand that doesn't make 5C, and you can easily miss
slam. Give partner something like AQTx / void / xxxx / AKxxx, 6C is cold,
and I won't be surprised to make 7. On the other hand, if partner has QTxx /
void / AKxxx / Axxx, a spade lead defeats 5C, while 4H will be down quite a
bit.

1. Given 2H forcing, have you ever seen 1C (1S) 2H (2S) and all pass?
2. Suppose the auction went 1C (1S) 2H (P), what choices you have when
holding a minimum hand? Have you lost any of these because of RHO's 2S?
My own answers to these questions are NO and NO. I bid 2NT as my hand plays
better in NT than hearts.
It looks very natural to me and put partner in a better position to judge
the situation. |
