A poll has found increasing visibility of gay people in America, plus rising
tolerance levels for homosexuality.According to CBS polling, only 42 per
cent of Americans said they knew a gay person in 1992 but this has now risen
to 77 per cent.
Only 22 per cent in the latest study claimed they did not know anyone at all

A new survey of more than 7,000 trans people in the US says that 41 per cent
have tried to kill themselves.
The research, carried out by the National Center for Transgender Equality
and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, also found than 19 per cent had
been refused medical care because of their trans status.
Twenty-eight per cent said they had experience harassment in hospitals or
doctors’ surgeries, while two per cent said they had been violently
assaulted in medical settings.

A report by the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law at UCLA (
University of California, Los Angeles) has found significant homophobia and
discrimination in the state of Utah, home to the Mormon Church.
The study of 939 LGBT Utahans found that sixty seven per cent of
transgendered and forty four percent of lesbian, gay and bisexual Utahans
say they have either been sacked or have been denied a job or promotion as a

Americans are more pessimistic than ever that the U.S. economy will improve
during the next year.
Just 27% of American Adults now believe the U.S. economy will be stronger in
one year, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone

In 2006, the Episcopal Church's presiding bishop, Katherine Jefferts Schori,
told the New York Times that Episcopalians were not interested in "
replenishing their ranks by having children." Instead, the church "[
encouraged] people to pay attention to the stewardship of the earth and not
use more than their portion."
