, in this context, is neither significant nor great.
Your advisor was being diplomatic. The fact that he made this remark means
you overdid the appreciation pretty significantly, or greatly. Had you
indeed overdone it slightly, he would not have said anything.
I would also suggest that you do not claim the paper was improved either

First a couple of years are very critical as a new AP.
You have to work hard and work smart, and don not waste time on projects/
activities that do not yield products.
Instead of trying to work for some other big names, first work your butt off
to get your own papers and your own grants.
Once you establish yourself, people will naturally want to collaborate with
you.
Today, some MD just sent her manuscript to me with my name on, and I feel
flattered/responsible to help out more.

I don't know. I don't think many people will be agitated by such a generic
answer, although as you sense, a compliment of "very good" does not mean too
much. The phrase sounds neutral to me---meaning neither superior nor
inferior.
I am not sure if the senior faculty got pissed off because he is self-abased
, or because the candidate flattered in the wrong way. My only take is that
the candidate is not passionate about the place. He may as well choose any "

,然后也就不了了之了。但,我的厄运却从此开始了。
公司的规定是:每人每月要和经理有个one to one meeting. 以前的one to one
meeting,就是谈谈项目,做的工作等等,时间也就是20-30分钟。
这个新经理变了,每次one to one meeting 都要进行90分钟左右,而且是20天一次。

If you are in the US, see a writing tutor and let him/her
make a critique; if you are in China, find a native speaker
and ask what he/she thinks. Keep in mind it does not matter

PS.

my suggestion is maybe you can write something if you are interested in them.
It never hurt.
There are a lot of reasons that you can be rejected.
It might not be you are not well prepared.
Maybe your performance is not that excited but already close enough.
They may have other concerns.
You can write something and let them remember you.
You may ask them for suggestions if they are kind enough.
You know, most people are happy to give advice as they feel flattered.
