）肯尼迪太空中心（KSC）旗下第五架实际执行太空飞行任务的航天飞机，也是最新的
一架，首次飞行是1992年5月7日的STS-49号任务。奋进号负责的任务中有不小比例是用
来支援国际太空站计划。
2011年5月16日，奋进号从佛罗里达州的肯尼迪太空中心发射升空，前往国际太空站。
这是它最后一次任务，在此次任务结束后，奋进号除役。
除役后的奋进号现于洛杉矶的加州科学中心永久展示。
正式编号轨道器105号（Orbitor Vehicle - 105）的奋进号，是美国一系列航天飞机之
中首架以公开征名竞赛的方式来决定命名的先例，由美国的中小学生决定航天飞机的命
名之后，再由布希总统在1989年时正式宣布。如同美国历架航天飞机的命名原则，奋进
号的名字也是源自一艘早年的研究调查船，著名英国探险家詹姆斯·库克船长（James

Enterprise
Enterprise的意思是努力进取的意思，企业号或企业级航空母舰和企业号航天飞机其实
是将错就错的误译，严格来说应该翻译为进取号。
Enterprise的历史来源是独立战争中俘获的一艘英国战舰，很多英国战舰都以一种精神
命名，象无畏级。
其他类似还有奋进号航天飞机，也是来源于一艘英国战舰，所以拼写沿用英式的
Endeavour，而不是美式的Endeavor。
发现号航天飞机来源是库克船长的探险船。哥伦比亚号、挑战者号也都是美国早期的探
