44年前的4月4号，星期四，傍晚，年仅39岁的美国著名民权斗士小马丁•路德&#
8226;金博士（Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.）被一颗冷枪子弹谋杀了。杀手是一个名
叫詹姆斯•厄•雷（James Earl Ray）的白人，他被判刑99年，1998年4月
23日死于监狱。当年的谋杀地点，田纳西州孟菲斯市的搂忍汽车旅馆（Lorraine Motel
），现在已成美国的国家民权博物馆。
1929年1月15号，乔治亚州亚特兰大市的奥本路（Auburn Ave），小马丁出生于一个黑
人民权牧师家庭。作为黑人孩子，他非常有幸能求学并在北方获得神学博士学位。1954
年，他与妻子Coretta Scott King移居阿拉巴马州蒙哥马利市，在Dexter Avenue
Baptist Church当牧师。

1991年10月，我初到美国不久，就在《纽约时报》上读到有关马丁·路德·金博士
论文存在抄袭（plagiarism）的消息，当时感到的震惊无以名状。虽然早就过了崇拜偶
像的年龄，但这位民权运动的领袖、非暴力运动的倡导者、神学博士、魅力型牧师、诺
贝尔和平奖获得者、被邪恶势力暗杀的烈士，仍然是我心中不可亵渎的英雄，难以想象
他会与抄袭剽窃之类的行径有任何牵连。于是，凭借一个中国人“本能的”政治敏感，
自然地就生出一份警觉：这会不会是什么阴谋？会不会是右派势力和种族主义者制造的
污名化运动？存着这份怀疑，便开始关注这个事件的来龙去脉，却获得了一份意外的教
益。
事件的始末
马丁·路德·金于1968年4月被暗杀。无论是他在世的时候，还是他遇难之后的二
十年间，几乎没有人注意到他可能存在抄袭的嫌疑。唯一的例外是 Ira G. Zepp，他在
1971年完成的博士论文中指出，金的自传性作品《迈向自由》（Stride Toward
