＂自行车＂这个名字真的不一般。 它对应的英文应该是automobile。 在清末世界上
还没有机动车时， 有个中国人在试骑过自行车后， 决定把自行车的英文bicycle（两
轮车）， 翻译成自行车 －＂会自己行走的车＂， 这个人对自行车的性能把握得极为
准确。
自行车确实是自己会行走的车， 只有对机械原理极为敏感的人才能悟到这一点， 一般
的人， 即使骑了十年自行车， 也会一直以为是自己在骑车， 而不是自行车自己会走
。
是车载人，而不是人骑车， 这一点在冰雪上骑自行车时比较容易体会到。 在冰雪上骑
自行车， 必须尽可能发挥车自动保持平衡的能力， 骑车人只是保持车行进的大方向，
不过度干预车的自动工作， 如果骑车人觉得自己才是老大， 自行车只是被自己操作
的工具，结果就是摔跟头的可能性大增。
自行车如果有了自备的动力，就成了摩托车， 骑摩托车的人比较容易理解到摩托车是
＂会自己行走的车＂。
摩托车的翻译来自音译motorcycle, 毫无新意，如同把自行车音译成＂百司科＂， 把

日语里叫自转车（自転車）不是自行车，这个译法显然不如汉语中的更科学更精确，
bicycle显然不是自己转的，但是它行驶中的平衡稳定是由于陀螺效应而自动产生的，
所以叫自行车很科学很有创意。
日本早期对西方术语的翻译还是不错的，都是用汉字意译，这样读者即使没见过的概念
也很容易猜测和理解其含义，早年间日本甚至连音译都用汉字，比如瓦斯，英国、苏连
等等，汉语中很多现代词汇都来自日语中的汉字，二战后日本改成用片假名音译，就彻
底文盲化了。电报、电话都是很不错的翻译，电视翻译成“忒累逼”（テレビ）就很淫
荡了。 |

北京工业大学92级一系机械工程系的。北京工业大学，第一次听说（确实是！），不清
楚教育质量如何；不过你作为一个曾经的中国人，能说出“汉语注定被淘汰”这样的话
，估计你已经不把自己当中国人了。你这样说你自己的母语，你爽，但我很不爽，因为
这也是我的母语！更因为你的结论与我的粗浅研究正好相反！如果你是我校友或朋友，
我或许会忍着肺气肿的危险装作没看见掉头离开；不过既然不是，你又是侵入我的主场，那
我当然就肆言无忌了。

tricycle, 还可以进一步缩写成bike
也说明英语没那么机械，反倒正是灵活性太强，你才觉得机械的掌握起来不容易
