與佛教同屬於新興宗教思潮的沙門陣營的耆那教，不僅是佛教初興當時的主要競爭對手
之一，同樣也為佛教傳統建構中的宗教制度發展等帶來刺激與滋養。雖然彼此教義有差
異，但是由於雙方實際興起與發展的時代重疊，宗教術語亦甚為接近，在宗教文化共構
處甚多的情形下，學界戲稱兩者為「姊妹教」。礙於彼此宗教競爭，佛教看待耆那教的
態度與耆那教理解自身宗教傳統的心態不同，從而「佛教聖典中的耆那教」與「耆那教
