The United States has lost its coveted top AAA credit rating.
Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's on Friday downgraded the nation's
rating for the first time since the U.S. won the top ranking in 1917. The
move came after Congress haggled over budget cuts and the nation's borrowing
limit -- and failed to cut enough government spending to satisfy S&P. The
issue has contributed to convulsions in financial markets.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage dropped this
week, following lower yields on Treasury bonds.
Freddie Mac says the average rate on the 30-year loan slipped to 4.87
percent from 4.95 percent. It hit a 40-year low of 4.17 percent in November.
The average rate on the 15-year fixed home loan fell to 4.15 percent from 4.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Fixed mortgage rates dipped to the lowest level of the year
this week. The third straight weekly decline comes at the start of the peak
buying season.
Freddie Mac says the average rate on the 30-year loan fell to 4.71% from 4.
78% the previous week. That matched this year's low reached in January. But
it is above the 40-year low of 4.17% hit in November.
